– Heartwood Path Waypoint 1.37 –
Seek Personal Growth For Yourself And Others And Make A Better World For Everyone
This series of courses is for adults interested in making a difference in the world. It is for those who want to be guided down a pathway of reading and doing. It is for those who want to improve lives through the reciprocal nature of personal growth and environmental protection.
You need not be a nature-lover like me for the Heartwood Path to have significance. Although I will provide waypoints that are the result of the time I spend preserving, protecting, and restoring the environment, you need not be an environmentalist like me to glean value from the pages that follow. Most of what I will share here regarding my experiences as an environmentalist will be of value to you regardless of your own particular way to make a difference in the world.
The Heartwood Path is written for those who seek personal growth for themselves and a better world for everyone. It is also for those who, in their efforts to serve others, have in the past ended up “spending themselves for the cause.”
The Heartwood Path is about a way to pursue personal and planetary improvement. Along this course you will discover what I call the “Law of Personal and Planetary Reciprocity,” stated as follows: “While personal well-being depends on planetary health, the fate of the Earth depends on the health, happiness, and personal development of humans.” To change something in your environment you need to become the change yourself.
Personal and planetary change and becoming the change you seek requires the suspension, usually as a temporary step leading to a desired result, of wanting. Human wants have created not only marvelous individual and cultural improvements but also widespread spiritual distraction and environmental destruction. I am speaking of both the wanting of positive things like security, acceptance, and survival and the negative wanting associated with conspicuous consumption, addictive consumption, overeating, and the like. My read of models in nature informs me that it is not enough to just get over my own negative wants. I need to also learn to release all wants, if only temporarily and if only the best I can, if I am to be able to find the junction of personal happiness and environmental sustainability. Some further elaboration is presented in the activity that follows:
