Apply the particular power needed to reach the specific goals embedded within the basic urges.

The goal of the urge to live, for example, is meaning, and the power needed in the search for meaning is hope. The goal of the urge to be free is self-determination, and the power needed in the search for self-determination is courage. The goal of the urge to understand is knowledge, and the power needed in the search for knowledge is curiosity. The goal of the urge to create is originality, and the power needed in the search for originality is imagination. The goal for the urge to enjoy is happiness, and the power needed in the search for happiness is enthusiasm. The goal of the urge to connect in life enhancing ways is love, and the power needed in the search for love is caring. The goal of the urge to transcend is unity, and the power needed in the search for unity is openness.

With these powers you do not have to listen to those who try to influence you with their pessimism.

People with mediocre minds are always opposed to those who possess great spirit.

The seven urges above are responses to human needs. We will be augmenting Abraham Maslow famous five-stage Hierarchy of Needs model, we with three additional stages of needs/urges. Maslow’s six stages include (Stage 1) Biological and Physiological Needs; which, once met, allows one to reach (Stage 2) Safety Needs; which, once met, enables one to focus on (Stage 3) Belongingness and Love Needs; which, once met, makes it possible to arrive at (Stage 4) Self Esteem Needs which, once met, makes it possible to arrive at  (Stage Five) Cognitive Needs; which, once met, allows one to attain (Stage 6) Self-Actualization Needs. We will be inserting between Maslow’s Stages Four and Five two additional stages: 1) Cognitive needs for knowledge and meaning and 2) Aesthetic Needs for appreciation and search for beauty, balance, and form. After Maslow’s Fifth Stage we will be adding a stage called “Transcendence Needs,” which has to do with helping others achieve self-transcendence. These three additional stages are borrowed from Alan Chapman (2003) and the activity below is inspired by and adapted from his work.
