As The Sojourn Continues, Be Sure You Are Oriented Properly
The Overture to the Heartwood Path is where you the reader had a chance to determine if the suggested route was suitable before leaving the comforts of home. Having read this far you likely have decided to begin making the Heartwood Path pilgrimage.
Imagine now that you have left the old ways of home and that you are at a fork along the trail.
The route to the left is uncharted. You do. It know where it leads. On the sign before you is an explanation for how the Heartwood Path proceeds to the right and how it leads you to the integrity needed for you to create a magnificent future for yourself and others.
Above this sign is a cloud with a silver lining, a symbol in nature that reminds sojourners on the Heartwood Path that noticing what is positive, feeling good about the world and your future, and trusting that you will make it through, leads to happiness and, by extension, environmental sustainability.
Happiness and environmental sustainability are related, in part, because people who are happy have less of a need to overcome their misery by placating themselves in environmentally taxing ways.
We will all, on occasion, need to own up to situations, see clearly, remain on-guard to self deception, and pick the proper road ahead. While it is important to face the facts, it is also important to decide to be optimistic. Optimists are more, not less, vigilant of risks and threats. For these reasons, doing the following activity offers ample rewards.

Optimism From Nature
If this is not a day when you prefer to spend time in nature without an agenda, do the following activity:
Visualizing Your Most Optimistic Future
For this activity, use the optimal functioning you will receive from being with your chosen natural being, assume its essence, and, as it, describe to yourself your ideal life after five or ten years of successful toil.
Write down your description of your ideal life.
Make an affirmation that you feel optimistic about your future. Commit to actively expressing optimism.
Nature is a powerful source of optimism and positivity. Here are five elements of nature that can inspire feelings of optimism and hope:
1. Resilience and Renewal
Nature's ability, after suffering adversity, to regenerate and recover is truly inspiring. After wildfires, forests can regenerate, plants can grow through cracks on the road, and ecosystems are able to recover from natural disasters. This resilience shows the power of regeneration and the possibility of new beginnings. It fosters a feeling of hope.
2. Biodiversity & Interconnectedness
The interconnectedness of all life forms, from microorganisms down to large mammals, is highlighted by the incredible diversity in nature. This biodiversity is not only important for the balance of the ecosystems, but it also represents the diversity and richness of life. It reminds us of the importance of diversity and cooperation in creating a balanced, thriving world.
3. Natural Beauty and Wonder
Natural landscapes such as mountains, beaches, forests and sunsets can inspire awe. This beauty can evoke a feeling of gratitude and peace, as it reminds us of the inherent goodness of the world and the simple pleasures we can find in our surroundings.
4. Seasons and Cycles
The seasons are cyclical, reflecting the rhythms of our lives. Spring's renewal, Summer's abundance and harvest in autumn, winter's rest, all reflect this. These cycles remind us of the necessity and naturalness of change, and that spring will arrive even after a darkest winter. This cyclical pattern instills a sense optimism regarding life's constant growth and evolution.
5. A Connection to Something Larger
Being in nature helps us to feel connected with something bigger than ourselves. These experiences, whether it is gazing up at the stars or walking through the forest, can help us feel a sense purpose and belonging. This connection can bring comfort and optimism because we know that we are a part of something bigger.
Nature can help us cultivate optimism and hope by reminding us of the beauty and potential of life.

Use Nature To Declutter The Mind
Declutter your mind before sleeping. Do not be preoccupied by the demands of your upcoming day when you record your dreams upon waking up. To have a cluttered mind while tending to your dreams is to make them dull and stale. Be receptive, fluid, interactive, grounded as you remember and record your dreams. Be centered in the “luxuriant beautiful Now” (Aizenstat, 2009, p. 27). Writes Aizenstat: “When we let go of our past and future concerns and simply meet the image in the eternal Now, we create an appropriate environment for good Dream Tending” (Aizenstat, 2009, p. 27).
Nature provides many ways to declutter the mind and promote relaxation before sleeping. Here are ten effective methods:
1. Evening walks
A walk in the natural environment can help you clear your head. Physical activity and the presence of nature in a natural setting can help reduce anxiety and stress, making it easier for you to relax before going to bed.
2. Listening to Nature Sounds
Listening to nature sounds such as ocean waves or rain can help create a relaxing environment. These sounds can mask intrusive thoughts, and create an atmosphere conducive for sleep.
3. Stargazing
Spend some time gazing up at the stars. This quiet activity will help you to shift your attention from the daily stresses and worries towards the vast expanse, calmness of the night skies.
4. Nature & Meditation
Meditation can be done in nature or by picturing the natural world. Visualize a natural scene that is peaceful, like a beach or forest. This can help you to center your thoughts and clear up mental clutter.
5. Earthing or Grounding
The act of grounding is to make direct contact with the Earth, for example by walking barefoot in grass or sand. This practice can reduce anxiety and stress by grounding you to the present moment. It also helps calm your mind prior to sleep.
6. Gardening
Evening light gardening can be a relaxing activity. You can relax and get away from stressful thoughts by engaging in repetitive tasks with plants.
7. Nature Inspired Aromatherapy
Use essential oils from natural sources such as cedarwood or eucalyptus in a spray or diffuser. These scents can help you prepare for sleep by evoking the soothing qualities of nature.
8. Watching Nature Videos
Videos of nature, wildlife or relaxing scenes can help you escape the stress of your day. Visual immersion in nature is a great way to relax and prepare the mind for sleep.
9. Reading About Nature
You can read nature-related articles, poetry, essays or descriptions. You can take your mind to beautiful and serene places. This will help you to relax and declutter.
10. Nature Visualization
Close your eyes before bed and imagine yourself in a natural setting. Imagine the sights and sounds of this peaceful place. This mental exercise will help you to shift your focus from everyday worries and create a relaxing pre-sleep routine.
These nature-based practices can improve your sleep by helping you declutter your brain, reduce stress and relax.
