Happiness grows best when you bring contributions rather than calamities into your endeavors. Gladness may seem unpredictable, but abundant, authentic, and abiding happiness becomes possible once you understand its nature.
We each have a fixed range of happiness, much like a fixed range for weight. Yet within that range, lasting happiness is achievable. You can raise your level of happiness by changing both external and internal circumstances.
External Circumstances That Support Happiness
Living in a stable democracy, maintaining strong relationships, avoiding chronic negativity, building a rich social network, and practicing a religion all help you live in the upper portion of your happiness range. Wealth, health, and advanced degrees may be valuable for other reasons, but they do not reliably produce abiding happiness.
Internal Circumstances That Support Happiness
Past
Cultivate satisfaction, pride, and serenity.
Lessen the sting of old hurts through gratitude and forgiveness.
Forgiveness means remembering objectively, empathizing with wrongdoers, rising above the event, committing to forgive, and holding the forgiveness over time.
Future
Build hope, faith, optimism, and trust.
Remember the Heartwood Path truism:
Bad events tend to be narrow in scope.
Good events tend to be broad and enduring.
Present
Seek joy, ecstasy, enjoyment, and—most importantly—flow.
Flow is complete absorption in an activity for its own sake. It includes:
challenging but attainable goals
focused attention
intrinsic reward
serenity and loss of self‑consciousness
loss of time
immediate feedback
skill matching challenge
sense of control
diminished awareness of physical needs
complete focus on the activity
Flow produces more happiness than worry about wealth, health, or accomplishments.
Pleasures vs. Gratifications
Pleasures are temporary sensory delights.
Gratifications are deeper, longer‑lasting states of absorption.
Higher pleasures—rapture, bliss, hilarity, elation, excitement—endure longer than bodily pleasures, but gratifications endure longest of all. Pleasures can lead to craving if overused; gratifications rarely do.
Enjoy pleasures in reasonable amounts, spaced over time, or as surprises.
Base your life more on gratifications than on bodily thrills.

Heartwood Path Axioms — Waypoint 2.56
Be a person who causes happiness wherever you go.
Contributions prepare the ground for happiness.
If it is bad, think temporary and specific; if good, think lasting and universal.
Higher pleasures endure longer than bodily pleasures.
Pleasures often end suddenly and may lead to craving.
Nocturnal Pilgrimage — Elation
Practice dream incubation:
Write a clear intention for tonight’s dream.
Draw a picture of what you want to dream.
Reinforce the intention with a ritual (placing under pillow, ceremonial bath, sacred spot).
After tending your dream, remember:
Greenspace improves health, longevity, activity, and social connection.
Even brief contact with nature reduces stress and strengthens immunity.
Move next to Pleasures vs. Gratifications, noticing how being with an attractive natural being improves your mood.
