Key Assertions: In one’s efforts to shift from Ego to Spirit one will go through four stages for the development of inner creativity: 1) a period of learning, Ego-development, and spiritual initiation; 2) a period of identifying with the Ego and enjoying the bittersweet fruits of the world; 3) a period of looking inward and cultivating the awakening of the extended self-identity beyond Ego; and 4) a period leading to a transcendence of all duality and all the various drives (often referred to as the period of “liberation”).Of all these stages, the period of looking inward and cultivating the awakening of the extended self-identity beyond Ego is most critical to the success of eartHearts.
The period of looking inward and cultivating the awakening of the extended self-identity beyond Ego unfolds in four successive bands but only the first two are typically achieved by eartHearts: 1) in the psychic/mystical band people are still too motivated by personal desires to shift decisively to truly expanded identity but they do have non-local psychic and mystical experiences that enlarge their vision of the world and their role in it; 2) in the transpersonal band “otherness” is discovered and the joys of discovery and service begin to enhance motivation.
To effectively work towards environmental sustainability by working on one’s self––the premise of the Heartwood Path––one will have to undergo some inner world developmental stages so that one will have the requisite creativity. In going through these stages one may become impatient and quite doing the necessary inner work because one may not realize that the results come in stages. Knowing the order of these stages, however, will help one continue to the necessary level of development. To reach GladandGreen Junction, where your deep happiness meets the deep need for environmental sustainability be sure to transcend from the domination of the Ego to the freedom of the Spirit. This wonderful leap in your inner world development will not really occur until you reach the third stage, as described below.
In one’s efforts to shift from Ego to Spirit one will go through four stages for the development of inner creativity:
a period of learning, Ego-development, and spiritual initiation;
a period of identifying with the Ego and enjoying the bittersweet fruits of the world;
a period of looking inward and cultivating the awakening of the extended self-identity beyond Ego; and
a period leading to a transcendence of all duality and all the various drives (often referred to as the period of “liberation”).
Of all these stages, the third developmental stage is most critical to the success of eartHearts.
You can notice when you are achieving the necessary level of development when you begin to see the unfolding of the various attributes associated with cultivating and awakening your extended self beyond the Ego. This awakening, which is required for passage to our destination of deep gladness and sustainability, unfolds third developmental stage as four successive bands. Knowing where you are in your inner world development helps you look for and recognize the next level. Nothing breeds success like success. Once you have achieved the next level of development, you will likely become motivated to move to yet another higher level. Here’s how you can recognize the various bands of stage three in your inner world advance into creativity:
In the psychic/mystical band you will likely still be too motivated by personal desires to shift decisively to truly expanded identity but you will most likely have non-local psychic and mystical experiences that enlarge their vision of the world and their role in it.
In the transpersonal band “otherness” is discovered and the joys of discovery and service begin to enhance motivation. This may be as far up the developmental “ladder” as you choose to go, which is fine. You can become a non-secular saint at this level. .
In the spiritual band, which few people have been known to achieve, life is lived in an ease-without-effort way, themes of the collected unconsciousness are explored extensively, and actions are appropriate to events. At this stage, you are likely to become an exceptional non-secular saint..
In the Atman band, cosmic consciousness is achieved—separateness vanishes as the subject, self, and consciousness become one. Getting this far makes you a sage, an extraordinary accomplishment. The Atman band is not required to reach Gladandgreen Junction.

Understanding And Ranking Your Sources Of Happiness
Learn about and rank your sources of happiness. In his book, An Ecology of Happiness, Eric Lambin presents the five sources of happiness. After reviewing these sources, give a ranking (on a zero to one hundred scale) of where you think your happiness comes from. The total of all of these numbers ought to equal 100. It will be interesting to see if, after you finish this course, the amount of happiness you get from each of these sources changes.
