As you read these Substacks, the boundaries of your self will expand to include the Earth and your conception of the other will expand to include the animated Universe. By expanding your conception of “the Self” in this way you will have the opportunity to overcome the problematic duality of Self and other; learn to perceive “unitively” rather than dualistically, and learn how to accept awesome gifts from Nature—gifts you can use to heal yourself, to grow spiritually, and to preserve the planet. It is through the self-discovery that comes with intimacy—intimacy with nature during the activities of this course—that you will be able to do these and other worthwhile things.
None of the worthwhile benefits of intimacy can occur very well when one follows old patterns of dualistic thinking such as the notion that Humans are separate from Nature. To keep from perpetuating this false aspect of reality I will often use the word “humaNature” when describing humans embedded in Nature. I use this term to help course participants remember that, while there is a diversity of seemingly separate entities, “all is one.”
The Heartwood Path fosters a strong spiritual sense of oneness—a sense that is, at once, expansive and ecological plus intimate and personal. Eventually as you continue down the Heartwood Path you will come to know that a strong spiritual sense arises spontaneously from the reciprocal nature of being nurtured by Nature and nurturing Nature.
