Pinpointing The Factors That Underlie Both A Happy Society And A Sustainable Economy
For this activity, write down your impressions of the each of the following three statements.
Two factors make up a happy society and a sustainable economy: 1) a good educational system and 2) values that are less focused on economic and physical security and more concerned the pursuit of the quality of life, (Lambin, 2012, p. 17).
A “profound relationship with natural things is a source of ... self-realization and of happiness . . . ” (Lambin, 2012, p. 20).
There are “nine possible dimensions to the biophilic (life-loving) tendency of humans . . .” (Lambin, 2012, p. 21). These nine dimensions are:
Utilitarian. “Nature is of material value to humans . . .”
Naturalistic. “A simple, direct contact with nature in different forms (landscapes, animals, flowers . . .) leads to mental and physical satisfaction . . .”
Ecological-Scientific. Nature is a source of learning.
Aesthetic. Nature is full of attractive beings.
Symbolic. “The diversity of nature suggest notions of category and differentiation, central to the structuring of language . . .”
Humanistic. “The humanistic experience of the natural world is characterized by a strong affection for the individual elements of nature . . .”
Moralistic. In certain circumstances, people have moral responsibility, vis-a-vis nature.
Dominative. Humans dominate nature but recent history shows us that this mastery often degrades nature.
Negativistic. An over-reaction to dangers in the natural world often leads to the extermination of animal populations . . .” (Lambin, 2012, pp. 21-23).
Write in your journal your impressions of the first two statements plus the previously listed nine dimensions and your reactions to them.
