The Authentic Self is not the mystique projected to the outside world—that is the work of the False Self, often called the Ego. Unlike this mask, the Authentic Self is your true being, your consciousness, and your genuine essence. While the False Self hides behind façades and creates unhealthy separations, the Authentic Self defines what is truly meaningful and important to you.
The False Self can sometimes act as a helpful assistant, navigating the demands of the world, but it often builds walls that isolate you from others and from your own deeper feelings. In contrast, the Authentic Self establishes healthy boundaries that honor your individuality without shutting you off.
It’s important to distinguish the Authentic Self from the Higher Self. The Authentic Self is accessed through personal reflection or therapeutic work, focusing on who you are and what you stand for. The Higher Self, by contrast, is recalled through spiritual practice and represents a connection to something greater than the individual.
Personal boundaries are the markers of your true self, encompassing your feelings, thoughts, needs, values, hopes, and dreams. The first step in personal growth is to connect with and live by your Authentic Self.
To discover your Authentic Self, consider these questions:
What did you want to be when you were very young?
What makes you laugh?
What clothes do you feel comfortable wearing?
What activities bring you joy?
Around whom can you truly be yourself?
For those developing as an eartHeart, connecting with the Authentic Self is foundational. From there, you can climb to higher levels of individual development, recall your connection to the spiritual realm, bring forth the Higher Self, and prepare to serve others and the Earth.
Reflect on where you stand with these steps. If you notice gaps, take steps to realign with your Authentic Self.
The False Self often dominates because of past wounds—rejection, betrayal, abandonment—that lead to hiding your true feelings and desires, not only from others but from yourself.
To The Real You…
HumaNatureConnect Activity
If today is not a day for unstructured time in nature, try this activity:
Start-up Protocol
Read the text with your literary, mental, and reasoning senses to guide you toward happiness and sustainability.
Then, engage your natural senses by spending time in nature, moving toward Gladandgreen Junction.
Attractive Natural Being
With pen and journal in hand, find a natural being that attracts you.
Appreciation and Gratefulness
While admiring this being, breathe in appreciation and breathe out gratitude.
Consent
After focusing on this being for at least ten seconds, consider your continued attraction as consent to connect deeply, leading to optimal functioning.
The Natural Senses
Use a mix of senses—radiation, feeling, chemical, and mental—to expand your perception and enrich your experience.
HumaNatureConnect Activity
With heightened awareness, engage in the activity and any follow-up components you choose.
Highlighting The Real You
Write a description of the real you—the self behind the mask and mystique. Reflect on your personality, life, and moments when you lost or regained your authenticity. Consider:
How true are you to yourself?
Do any actions make you feel like an empty shell?
How do you uphold or violate your personal responsibility?
Where do your values and actions align or mismatch?
What biases challenge your authenticity?
How do your behaviors range from absurd to meaningful, and what does this reveal about you?
Follow-up Protocol
Natural Systems Reflection Process
Journal your impressions of this activity and share your insights with others.
Nocturnal Pilgrimage
“In Dream Council we express our Dream Images in physical form,” writes Aizenstat. “Manifesting Dream Images physically transports both them and us into the immediacy of the present moment” (Aizenstat, 2009, p. 235). Fear of embarrassment or perceived lack of artistic skill may cause resistance, but creating your Dream Council members is a necessary step. Use natural materials like rocks, feathers, twigs, nuts, leaves, bones, or shells to construct them simply.
When ready, proceed to the next waypoint: “Personal Space.” Follow any urges to connect with nature regularly, whether wandering without agenda or engaging in the next activity, or both.
