The Heartwood Path asks each of us to wake up — to free ourselves from the confusion of our own minds and from the mistaken belief that we are separate from one another. We are unique, yes, but we are also expressions of a greater whole. When we share what we learn about our inner lives, we help others awaken to their own wholeness.
A central part of this awakening involves working with the Inner Shadow — the aspects of ourselves that our psyches repress and render unconscious. These Shadow qualities are not simply the traits we hide from others; they are the traits we fail to notice in ourselves. Some are negative, some are positive, but all are important. We often discover them through projection, when we unconsciously transfer our own traits or emotions onto another person. The other person becomes a screen, and what we see in them reveals something about us.
When we recognize that we are projecting, and when we acknowledge that the qualities we see in others also live within us, we become more empathetic, more appreciative, more compassionate, and more whole. This is one of the ways we move toward Gladandgreen Junction.
To work with your Shadow, recall two people from your life — one you strongly dislike and one you strongly admire. These should be people you over‑react to, either positively or negatively. List the traits that disturb you and the traits you admire. Then consider how each trait might also be present in you. These traits are not obstacles; they are invitations. They show you how you might grow, soften, or expand.
When you embrace your screens as allies, you begin to integrate your Shadow. You become more complete. You wake up. You free yourself from confusion. You remember that you are part of a greater whole.
This is the work of sharing — not merely passing along ideas, but helping others awaken by awakening yourself.
