Apply The Particular Power Needed To Reach The Specific Goals Embedded Within The Basic Urges
The goal of the urge to live is meaning, and the power needed in the search for meaning is hope. The goal of the urge to be free is self-determination, and the power needed in the search for self-determination is courage. The goal of the urge to understand is knowledge, and the power needed in the search for knowledge is curiosity. The goal of the urge to create is originality, and the power needed in the search for originality is imagination. The goal for the urge to enjoy is happiness, and the power needed in the search for happiness is enthusiasm. The goal of the urge to connect in life enhancing ways is love, and the power needed in the search for love is caring. The goal of the urge to transcend is unity, and the power needed in the search for unity is openness.
With these powers you do not have to listen to those who try to influence you with their pessimism. People with mediocre minds are always opposed to those who possess great spirit.
The seven urges above are responses to human needs. We will be augmenting Abraham Maslow famous five-stage Hierarchy of Needs model, we with three additional stages of needs/urges. Maslow’s five stages include
We will be inserting between Maslow’s Stages Four and Five two additional stages: 1) Cognitive needs for knowledge and meaning and 2) Aesthetic Needs for appreciation and search for beauty, balance, and form. And after Maslow’s Fifth Stage we will be adding a stage called “Transcendence Needs,” which has to do with helping others achieve self-transcendence. These three additional stages are borrowed from Alan Chapman (2003) and the activity below is inspired by and adapted from his work.
If this is not a day when you prefer to spend time in nature without an agenda, do the following activity:
Satisfying Eight Human Needs
HumaNatureConnect Activity: Satisfying Eight Human Needs. With pen and journal in hand, go to an attractive natural area and, in a spirit of appreciation, look around you to find something that is attractive to you. Once you find an aspect of nature that is attractive to you continuously for at least ten seconds, use the optimal functioning you receive along with your continued attraction (which can be thought of as your consent to do this activity with the help of the attractive natural being) to determine what human needs you have already satisfied and, assuming you have not met all your needs, what are the next urges you can expect to emerge.
First Stage of Human Need
Begin by asking yourself if your biological needs are being met. If not, you will likely have the urge to make sure you have food and shelter.
Second Stage of Human Need
If these needs are met, you will likely have the wherewithal to address your likely need for belongingness and love.
Third Stage of Human Need
If not met and the previous two needs are met, you will likely have the urge to be loved, to be a part of a family, to have adequate relationships with colleagues and friends, and to be accepted for who your are.
Fourth Stage of Human Need
If these needs are met you may be able to move up the hierarchy of needs to the esteem needs stage. If the previous three needs are met but this one is not you will likely feel the powerful urge to be successful in life and work, to be recognized by your peers, to be satisfied with your responsibilities, roles, status and reputation.
Fifth Stage of Human Need
Once the previous four needs are satisfied, you will likely have the urge to satisfy your cognitive needs. If these needs are not met you will like feel the chief urge to improve your self-awareness, to pursue knowledge and the meaning of things beyond the necessities of work.
Sixth Stage of Human Need
Once all of the previous five needs are met you may feel the urge to satisfy your aesthetic needs. If these needs are not met and all of the previous needs are met, you may be feel compelled to actively seek beauty and balance and to engage in the arts.
Seventh Stage Of Human Need
Once the six previous levels of needs are satisfied you will likely feel the urge to satisfy your need for self-actualization. If this need is not met but the previous needs are met you will likely have the chief aim of self-knowledge and enlightenment. You will feel that the most important thing to you is to have “peak experiences” and to realize your ultimate personal potential.
Eighth Stage of Human Need
Once all of the previous stages of needs are met you will likely feel the luxury of being able to focus chiefly on the need to help others achieve their ultimate potential. You will feel the need to do so, no matter what it takes. This is the level of needs aspired to by Earthearts. The Heartwood Path leads to this level of needs satisfaction. From this summary, determine your level of needs.
Write in your journal how you plan to address the urges that correspond with your level of need. Be grateful for the needs you have already achieved and be thankful for the opportunity to transcend to the need to be a helper of others without crashing.
