Get To Know Your Chakras
The Soul, as previously mentioned, is your own personal cove in the ocean of the Spirit. One’s own Soul has a structure in the “form” of a system of energy centers that provide one with both power and healing. These energy centers give structure to one’s inner world. Called “chakras” these spinning transformers of energy enable one to become more refined and less animalistic. They enable one’s personal power to become more transcendent, consummate, total, and exquisite. They are not physical objects, but vortexes of energy associated with various parts of the garage of the Soul—the body. They affect our moods and are affected by moods.
Chakras form a bridge between the body’s energy field—our spiritual aspect—and the body’s physical parts. They are the key way your body makes physiological responses to your thoughts.
Just as your circulatory system, respiratory system, and digestive system are primary components of your physical body, so too are the chakras one of the key systems of your energy body. This energetic portion of your being is the part that transmits and records your thoughts and interactions.
Chakras cause one’s biology to be determined by one’s biography. They are the links between one’s good and bad experiences of events and one’s physical body. In this way, the psychosomatic (mind/body) energy regulated by the chakras is the bridge between one’s experience and one’s body, between the visible and the sacred, between the microcosm and the macrocosm, and between sexuality and spirituality.
Here is a simple explanation of what the chakras do, from certified Reiki specialist and hypnotherapist Inessa Zeleski:
“Generally speaking . . . the three lower chakras (the root, belly and solar plexus chakras) correlate to basic primary needs - those of survival, procreation and will - and have a larger physiological component to their functioning. The four higher chakras are more related to our psychological makeup: the heart, throat and third eye chakras are more advanced and more mature, defining love, communication and knowledge; the crown chakra is purely spiritual, providing the connection to the universe beyond” (Zeleski).
When one arouses all the chakras through practices described in the Heartwood Path for Couples course, spirituality takes on a whole new meaning and importance in one’s life. The particular brand of spirituality described in the Heartwood Path—Creation-based and largely in the Christian mysticism tradition—is, primarily, a way of passion that leads to compassion.
If this is not a day when you prefer to spend time in nature without an agenda, do the following activity:
Getting To Know Your Chakras
For this activity, find a comfortable and private place to sit upright on the ground. Clear a space for your lighted candle and place it on the ground in front of you. As you experience each of your chakras healing will occur because when the chakras are experienced the awareness sends energy to the chakras which, in turn, stimulate the important endocrine gland associated with each chakra, thus bringing forth increased flow of nutrients needed for the various functions of the body (as described subsequently). Look at the light and imagine a light growing inside of you, between your legs at the base of your spine. Close your eyes and focus your attention on the light in a relaxed and gentle way. Rub you hands together to create the heat necessary to bring warmth to the various parts of you body you will be touching. Whether you are a man or a woman, begin by spreading the warmth to your chest area and belly by moving your hands in a circular fashion. Then, rub your hands in the area of your genitals just enough to bring forth added arousal, heat, and tingling but not enough to induce an orgasm. Three to five minutes is usually sufficient (but never enough). As you increase your aliveness, imagine that the inner light is growing brighter. Once your sexual energy is aroused you will begin feeling your First Chakra. It will be a feeling of lust – hardness for men, wetness for women. Beyond these physical sensations notice any sensations of life and survival, including increased sex drive, the desire to go wild, and the need to be released or filled. With these sensations one’s ovaries or testicles are being flooded with vital energy. Aware of such feelings, close your eyes again and breathe in through your nose, taking deeper and deeper breaths until you imagine that the air is filling you all the way down to your genitals. Regularly hold your breath and relax your body so as not to impede the inner flow of energy. In the moment between inhalation and exhalation (both through the nose), with a relaxed body, one is more likely to experience the feelings of ecstasy--lightness and emptiness. As you hold your breath, repeatedly tighten and loosen the muscles around the anus and perineum. This is called the PC Pump. Continue this procedure three to six times, or until you feel energized in your belly and pelvic area, until you “see” the white light glowing brightly in the mind’s eye, or until you feel warmth, a throbbing sensation, pulsing, or even mini-orgasmic sensations as you exhale slowly. You now have awareness of your First Chakra. Next, close your eyes again and, as you inhale, imagine that you are drawing up the white light to a spot about two inches below the navel. This is the location of your Second Chakra. It will be important throughout this activity to maintain the arousal of the First Chakra in the Sex Area. To do so, you can continuously and slowly rock your pelvis and, for greater effect, imagine that the light is descending with your exhalations so it can be recharged in the manner previously described. As you draw up the White Light and its associated lusty feelings to the Second Chakra, the associated feelings will change from lust alone to lust plus subtly enhanced emotions. These may include jealousy, competitiveness, dissatisfaction, criticality, or any of a number of feelings including the curious push-pull syndrome that makes one think “I want you, but go away.” Along with these sensations is the flooding of the adrenals and kidneys with vital energy. Once you have drawn up the lusty feelings of the First Chakra and experienced any of the heightened emotions associated with the Second Chakra three to six times, it is time to move on to experiencing the Third Chakra. As before, close your eyes, exhale as you imagine the light moving down to be recharged by the First Chakra. After you are aroused again in the manner described above, imagine the charged light moving up with an extended inhalation through the First Chakra, through the emotions of the Second Chakra to that hollow and soft place just below the hard sternum of the rib cage. The sexual and emotional energy of the previous chakras moves up with the white light in your mind and will again change. Added to the sensations will be a sense of assuredness, personal power, charisma, and the ability to make things happen in the world the way you want. Along with these sensations is the flooding of the adrenals, pancreas, and kidneys with vital energy. Move the energy from the First to the Third Chakra three to six times. Recharge as before, but this time move the energy upward through the Second, and Third Chakras to the Heart area of the body, between the breasts. As you hold your breath you will feel warmth of love spreading throughout your chest. This warmth indicates that the thymus gland––which rejuvenates and guards the immune system––is being revitalized. Repeat the procedure three to six times or until you feel, along the flowing and warming feeling of love, a sense of gratitude for the gift of life, expanded hope, and a sense of renewal. Having now experienced the Fourth chakra, the Heart Chakra, it is time to become aware of the Fifth Chakra, located in the throat. You will become aware of the Fifth Chakra as the imaginary white light––a representation of one’s consciousness––energizes the thymus in the throat (thus stimulating growth and aiding metabolism). As this occurs, “you know who you are and what you want, and you can express it” (Anand, 1989, p. 173.). Repeat pulling up the energy into Throat Chakra three to six times or until you feel a heightened sense of authenticity and expressiveness. When you move the energy up to the Sixth Chakra, between and behind the eyebrows the energy will feel crisp and you will have greater intuitive knowing. Once the energy moves to the Seventh Chakra, after inhaling and drawing up the light to the top of the head, it feels like a fountain gushing from your head and pleasurably––fantastically pleasurably––raining down over your body. Simultaneously, you will feel one with everything (Anand, 1989). When you write down your impressions of this activity in your journal include any physical or emotional sensations you feel as you draw up the light, chakra by chakra.
